Terenc Advisory

Most advisors look at a small utility or an overlooked neighborhood and see a list of problems. We see undervalued assets: local trust, committed people, real fundamentals that a quick read of the numbers misses. Terenc helps the people running these places recognize what they already have and build on it.

What Terenc is

Terenc, LLC is an advisory firm in Bloomfield, Iowa. We work with small utilities, rural electric cooperatives, county and municipal governments, school districts, and the organizations that serve them, on decisions that are hard to see clearly from the inside: federal programs, rate structures, capital plans, resource planning, enrollment and demographic shifts.

We are independent. We sell no equipment, manage no construction, and take no referral fees. When we recommend something, the only reason is that we think it is right.

The firm is organized as practice areas. Energy and Infrastructure is live today. The structure is built to hold more.

How we work

Anyone who has backed a trailer knows the feeling: the steering works backwards, the mirrors only show so much, and the harder you correct, the worse it gets. Nobody doubts the driver. The driver just cannot see everything from the seat, and was never supposed to. That is what a spotter is for: someone standing where you cannot, giving a few calm signals.

That is the work. You keep the wheel. You make every decision. We stand where the seat cannot see, and we signal in plain words.

What kind of work

We build on what is there. Repair what is worth repairing, add what multiplies it, and never tear out working assets because starting over is easier to sell. A battery beside the gensets you already own is not a replacement; it is growth. A management system over the inverters already on your feeders is the same. Your prior decisions were not the past. They are the foundation.

Sometimes the numbers, honestly run, say replace. Then we say so. What we will not do is recommend it because it bills better. We never cut the line.

Who is behind it

Chris Ball, Founding Principal.

Chris leads the Energy and Infrastructure practice. He co-authored DOE-funded research with Idaho National Laboratory on how rural electric cooperatives approach distributed energy, and has managed battery storage from proposal through delivery, including a 1 MW / 4 MWh project for an Iowa cooperative. His work is practical: help the people running small systems cut through vendor noise, make defensible decisions, and deliver projects that hold up to a board, a bond advisor, and a funder.

How an engagement works

Working with Terenc is a relationship, not a one-off report. Engagements are defined in scope and price before they start; there is no hourly billing. Most clients begin with a conversation about the decision in front of them, and most continue on a retainer that puts senior judgment on call for the decisions that come next.

Each engagement leaves two things behind: a written document, plain enough for a board to read in one sitting and specific enough to act on, and a group of people who can explain it in their own words.

Where this is going

Terenc is built as a platform of practice areas, each led by a principal with real experience in that work. Energy and Infrastructure is the first. The same method, seeing what a community already has and turning it into results that show up on paper, applies to community development, school and district planning, and local government capital decisions, and the firm is structured to grow into them one principal at a time.

Alongside advisory work, we are turning what we have learned into tools others can use: published research, field guides, templates, and training built for the people who run small systems. The Field Guide for REAP Grants is the first of these.

The name

Terenc is said ter-ance. It is a plain name for a plain-spoken firm.
